Late on Saturday, I officially turned the corner with this pregnancy. I hit that point where, instead of confidently and nonchalantly carrying on about my business, pushing myself to do the things I would ordinarily do, I finally acknowledged that I could go into labor at any moment, put my feet up on the sofa, and ordered my husband to do my bidding.
OK, not really, but after two hours running around Oakland's Chinatown searching for moon cakes and dim sum, I felt sort of funny. My body ached, and I felt a little queasy and very tired, and the alarm bells began to rang in my head: this, my friend, could finally be it. I felt nervous about leaving the house, and also, too exhausted to do much of anything. So Andrew went out to get the pizza and the movie and I let him go alone. Sunday I didn't leave the house at all; Andrew took Bentley to the dog park and picked up dinner, and I stayed on my butt and napped and read and watched season three of "Six Feet Under."
This morning, I stayed in bed 'til 10.
I went on to have a productive day today, cooking two freezer meals (more on that in a minute), but I'm wiped out. And my quickie trip to the grocery store officially winded me. My first week of maternity leave was ultra-productive, but now I'm feeling the limitations of being an almost-mom. My body is craving rest, lots of rest. I remember when my friend Alisa was a week overdue and feeling restless, and to me, because I was stuck in a cubicle at work, sitting around the house for several days sounded like the most glorious thing in the world. But it actually isn't. My body wants to rest, but my brain is demanding productive activity.
In the meantime, this alien maternal monster has taken over my body. I actually visited a scrapbooking store the other day. And I've been cooking an average of two meals a day to freeze for dinners later. Our freezer is filling up with food, so I might need to stop before I expected to, but so far, here's what's for dinner at the Gordon house this fall:
Black Bean and Sweet Potato Enchiladas
Oriental Turkey Burgers
Lasagna
Chicken Parmesan
Pesto Meatballs with Couscous
Mexican Meatball Soup with Rice
Beef Bourguignonne
I have plans to make a few more casseroles, but we'll see how my body cooperates these next few days.
Yummy! I'm coming for dinner! :-)
