Maddie had a cold last week (following a party where I heard at least three mothers say "He's just getting over something," so it was no surprise). As usual, she had a runny nose and a little fever. She seemed to be getting over it this past weekend, but her runny nose continued and she started to cough. We also noticed she was drooling like crazy, puddles and puddles of saliva!
Sunday night, when we were out for the night and she was staying with her grandparents, Maddie came down with another fever. She was cranky and restless and wouldn't stay asleep for Joel and Lesley. Thinking she was still sick, Andrew and I elected to work from home Monday and tag-team so she wouldn't go to day care and infect the other kids.
Monday morning she woke up fiercely cranky. On a hunch, I swiped my finger across her bottom gum. And what do you suppose I found? That's right! A merciless, sharp little tooth was poking its way through, hurting my little baby girl so much. All day Monday she would be playing happily, then suddenly her face would simply crumple when she remembered how much it hurt her.
She has basically given up on solids except for Cheerios — I think the fruits must sting her tender gums, and I suspect Cheerios are her form of comfort food anyway. (As one who has been down for the count for two days with a high fever and sore throat, I can relate — my comfort foods have been chicken soup, grilled cheese sandwiches and chocolate pudding.)
It seems like she's been "teething" for so long, though, so it is nice to see the fruits of her labor! I hope she gets a lot of them at once so we don't prolong the misery for much longer.
